What Is Qigong?
Qigong is an energy practice that originated at least 4,000 years ago in China. Qigong was most likely first utilized as a shamanic practice, during which, the shaman utilized a form of meditative dance to enter an altered state of consciousness. The intention was likely healing and/or clearing unwanted energies.
In later years there were four main forms of Qigong which developed across various classes of society - scholarly qigong, medical qigong, martial qigong and religious qigong. The first two groups were focused more on maintaining optimal health and healing illness and the third group was focused on developing internal and external strength for battle. The last group was the most secretive and included traditions such as Taoism and Buddhism. Both of which were highly spiritual and the primary focus was enlightenment.
Of note, is that the Buddhist (and Taoist) traditions were influenced partly by a few key teachers from India, who brought the teachings of the Buddha to China. The most noteworthy transmissions occurring in 58 A.D and 527 A.D. Also of note is that you will frequently see an alternate spelling for Qigong (Chi Kung). Both are referring to the same thing and the difference relates to which system you use when romanizing Chinese characters
